Do I need a building consent for a pergola?

An unroofed pergola is exempt from consent regardless of size under Schedule 1 (clause 6) of the Building Act. Adding a solid roof changes its status to a veranda-type structure, which is exempt only up to about 30m² using lightweight materials or a Licensed Building Practitioner — beyond that, consent is generally required.

Can a pergola be attached to my house?

Yes — pergolas are commonly attached over an existing deck or patio to extend living space, or built freestanding elsewhere in the garden.

What roofing options are available for pergolas?

Options range from open lattice and shade cloth through to fixed solid roofing and adjustable aluminium louvre systems.

How much shade does a pergola provide?

It depends on the roof type — open lattice provides partial, dappled shade, while a closed louvre system or solid roof provides near-complete shade and rain protection.
